System will stop completely on its own

Now 2 or 3 times a day. For no reason, no warning. It started maybe a week ago.

The first time, I went to sleep and when I woke up, the computer was closed. I thought nothing of it, I started to use it and it suddenly closed. It's not a normal end either, it directly goes black.

And, since then, it's been doing it 2 or 3 times a day. I'm about to reinstall OSX but I'm slightly scared that it would crash during the installation phase.

Is this a virus or a known problem? Couldn't find anything browsing the forum

It's likely not a virus, since it would be the first on our platform. It might not be a known problem, or it might. Someone else may have seen it. Could definitely be a hardware issue. Have you tried running the Apple Hardware Test from the OS X CD/DVD?

Yeah "virus" is an old PC habit. I was thinking something was wrong with the equivalent of my "registry" or whatever. I haven't tried to run the AHT from the DVD, no.

It's on iMac G5 - Mac OSX Install disc 1?

Thanks for your help

It's on a different disc that shipped with my iBook. It's labeled "Apple Hardware Test". You need to insert the disc, reboot, and hold down the 'C' key when you hear the chime. It will boot into the disc and allow you to run the utility.
