Tachyon

September 10, 2003 - While Apple is still wrapping up development of Mac OS X 10.3, code-named Panther, the company is also preparing another build train of the OS upgrade.

Code-named Tachyon, the build train will provide a Panther installation tuned with special support for new hardware to be released after the upgrade hits the final "gold master" stage.

as mentioned by some1 earlier, tachyons are imaginary/hypothetical particles. assumin that they exist, u are tryin to prove einstein wrong :p only time will tell who is/was correct :)

Just so that everbody knows what's in that macrumors.com update about Tachyon: It's the codename for the Panther Developer Tools, not Panther Client.

While Apple _does_ indeed build special builds for hardware that appears _after_ the release of an OS, Apple does _not_ start with those builds _before_ the release of an OS.

Adding newer hardware to the supported list for an OS release is a matter of small changes, usually. And small changes are _continually_ being made to the OS, with 10.x.x releases being milestones of those build tracks. Those milestones _do_ get codenames. But as mentioned at macrumors.com, Tachyon is not a codename for such a build.

Let's assume that Panther will hit Golden Master with a build numbered 7B80. If no major errors are found in this build (even after release), Apple will start with 7C1. And we'll someday see a 10.3.1 update. It'll be called 7Cxx. (Check build numbers of Jaguar, for example.) There are exceptions from this rule, but it's still a rule Apple usually follows.

(One BIG exception being 10.2.7 for the G5s being 6Sxx builds, while 10.2.8 currently bears 6Rxx numbers.)
