.tar File Dates Not Retained

I'm in process of migrating data (image files and InDesign page layouts) from an older Xserve/RAID to a new one; since these layouts are linked to the images, it's critical to preserve their location paths on the destination drives, as well as the dates; if an image file's date appears as modified since the last time the layout it's linked to was opened, the user is required to relink to it, which is what I'm trying to avoid.

After using the Terminal to create a tar file, I untar it to its destination; during the unarchiving process, I can see that the folders are retaining their proper dates. But when the process is complete, all of the folders will simultaneously update to the current date and time!

This appears to be an issue only on the destination RAID; untarring to a different machine retains the correct date/times. Suggestions? TIA :-)
