tar seems to have no newer option

tar, as supplied with OS X, seems not to have the --newer option, nor any other way to specify to backup files newer than some date.....am I missing something?

I downloaded GNU tar which does seem to have that feature and tried to make it with "sh ./configure" but it does not recognise the system....and which to choose?
 
Did you try using 'gnutar' which should be installed already, so you don't have to bother building/installing?
