You could try Disk Warrior, when I had a similar problem there were reports that it could fix this in some cases, but not all. In the end I had to repartition the drive and re-install the system.

I know this is not probably the best time to mention it, but did you not back-up the data if it was that important ?

Yep, I'd consider accepting that the drive is unrepairable. You can try one, two or four disk-saving tools (although you shouldn't if it was upgraded to Leopard, yet).

Alsoft says that DiskWarrior will work on Leopard if booted from their CD. (I have not tried it yet)

If you have another computer you could try booting the troubled iMac as a Target drive (hold command + t on restart till you see the yellow firewire icon) and then plug it into a non troubled comp with a firewire cable.

This way, and it's a long shot, you might be able to first get the data off the drive and then go about repairing it.

There are services, somewhat expensive, that can recover data for you even if your disc takes a complete dive. They try to recreate the directory so you can view files. However, most often you end up losing files this way.

I hope this isn't an expensive lesson for you for the future...
