Terminal app | root password

Hello,

I'm a "newbie" to terminal app and UNIX shell on MacOS: Yesterday I wanted to install some software on my mac and took the terminal app to do this. I had set a root password (not the admin password...) in the net panel, which has been accepted by the system. Although I had done this, in the terminal app I couldn't type ANY password, the keyboard seems to be locked. What have I done wrong or have I forgotten something?
The other thing I'd like to know: The startup disk has locked permissions in the infobox, why?
Maybe these are dumb questions from a newbie, but please help me with this problem.

Thankx

First, you need to enable root access in the NetInfo Manager (Applications: Utilities)

In NetInfo go under Domain: Security: Authenticate (enter admin password)

Then Domain: Security: Enable Root Access

Now in your terminal you can use a sudo (DO a command as a SUper user (root)) OR type SU and login as root.

Careful, you can really screw things us when acting as root.

As for your freeze up - when asked for a password in terminal you will see no cursor or text at all.
