I read the admiralAK post and learned the basics of terminal, but when I was asking about programming in another post they gave me an example of java thru terminal.....could someone show me a place where I could learn about terminal's uses besides deleting stuff and seeing spyware? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Thanks, well I'll probably just get the macosx missing manual since whenever I looked at the opinions of O'Reilly's books the majority were quite negative.

Negative? That's funny. O'Reilly books are often considered the best out there. Any computer geek will have at least a few in their book shelves.

the missing manual is a great manual for the GUI side of OSX, but stays on the surface when it comes to the terminal.
you'd better buy 'OS X Unleashed'. That goes deep into the terminal and unix side of OS X

sorry, here's the full reference:

Ray, John & Ray, William C.:
Mac OS X Unleashed.-
Sams, 2001.
1500 pages.

You should be able to get it in any decent bookstore (especially online).

hope this helps

I have to ditto hazmat. I have seven O'Reilly titles on my shelf at home (out of about 15 computer books) and three titles at work (out of four books).

The writing style is entertaining and informative, the content is very comprehensive, and they have the best index in any book I have ever seen.

I think I have about that many as well. :) O'Reilly books are the only ones I ever buy sight-unseen. If they have one for something I need, I get it.

In 1995, when I was working at an ISP, I needed to learn vi. So, I picked up the Learning the vi Editor book from O'Reilly on Friday after work, and by Monday was using it well. There you go. :)
