Text edit file lost

Can anyone think of how/why this would have happened. I worked on a document in textedit saving periodically for about five hours. I saved one final time and then closed the document. I just went to open the document and the original text document without all of my revisions opened up. Why would this have happened if I had been saving? Is there a way I can retrieve these files? I don't have time machine.

Perhaps the file you thought you were saving to is not the file you were actually saving to?

Is there another file on your hard drive named the same thing, but perhaps located somewhere else?
