TFT Monitor advise

I'm looking to buy a TFT monitor today, I'm looking to get either a 17" or 19", I'd prefer 19" cos they look so much bigger for a little extra but I don't wanna buy a 19 when the quality won't be as good as a higher end 17, what should I look for when buying? my parents have a 17" digital Dell TFT (on a XP PC) and the picture is sooooo crisp and the colors are nice and bright, it's a gorgeous monitor but I just don't wanna wait ages for Dell to deliver.

if it's to go with the Mini, why not get a 20" Apple Cinema Display? I have one, and it's beautifully crisp and clear.

look at dell 20" lcds - exactly the same as the apple one (same lg/philips panel, but half the price). not as nice (not alu) but a helluva lot better than a crappy 17/19" at 1280x1024

I agree with Lt Major Burns, if you are going to go bigger than 17, don't waste your money on a 19, you get the same resolution but fonts are just bigger.

If you are having trouble choosing between the Apple and the Dell read this
http://anandtech.com/displays/showdoc.aspx?i=2400

Essentially both displays are the same as Lt Major Burns said, the LCD exactly the same, however I believe anand said that Apple and Dell used different backlighting and Apples was better. The felt that the only reason to go with the Apple is if you needed to have precise colors. If you don't need the Firewire hub and the cool cable organization go with the dell, it is cheaper, ugly, but cheaper

erm. actually....

dell currently quote £554.60 for their 20", apple £549. are you in education? the edu store is currently down in uk, but it'll be a heft discount on top of that.

go for the apple. i have one. i actually stroke it. it feels lovely.

*sigh* i love apple :)

I bought a 19" Samsung SyncMaster 910N as I got it for £199 (£100 off), I can't afford Apple prices otherwise I'd be straight on Apple.com and clicking 'buy' :(

The Samsung is a nice picture and for £199 I'm really happy with it, it's loads better than the 17" CRT that I had :)

Thanks for the advise guys.

The Dell works out at £422 vs. £472 education for the Apple. Not a particularly hard choice...

£50 is worth it - you get the satisfaction of the really pleasant design - remember, this is the thing you will looking at for the next 3 years+ probably. the stand is a lot more minimal than the chunky dell, and the fully enclosed arcitecture will probably mean it lasts longer, as theres no way for dust to get in. the lovely tactile feel to the metal, and touch-buttons on the side make it an experaince

I'm planning on a dual 2.0Ghz/ dual 20" setup for christmas and the dell was initially at the top of my list but not anymore. Why spend £50 less on something made by Dell? If I adopted that mentaility i'd have some Inspiron abomination or something. I think i'll get one display at a time though, one at christmas and one in 12 months time.

i'd probably go for a 23" over 2 20"s

it's a bigger space on the main screen, and i'm already wanting more space on the main screen. it seems a waste putting a lovely cinema display to work just holding a few palettes.... i really want a 23" now but i can't justify/afford it

better still.... 30"

heaven

... except i'm running Logic and i'm not just going to put some toolbars on there!

I also can't afford the 23" if I get a G5 at the same time! Now a 20" and a 23" later........
