the definitive 150 features list for panther

crash

and burn
when jaguar came out, i started a thread that asked users here to post whatever new features they've seen or know about in the OS. in keeping with tradition, i think it's be great to have a unified list for all to see.

since a lot of you guys have the panther betas, i'm sure this list will grow faster than the jaguar list.

so here goes:

1.) just saying "new finder" doesn't cut it for me. it's really like, 20 new features. namely: metal interface, the shelf, labels, integrated sftp support, fast find improvements, expose, etc

2.) new mail features: safari HTML, threads, draggable Bcc and CC fields, any others?

3.) font book
4.) fast user switching
5.) X11 final
6.) greatly improved preview.app

i guess any of us can just go look through the apple website and see the more popular features, so all you panther beta guys, lets see some posting!

I;d imagine the terminal...the dock is so slim, you wouldnt be able to see anything. Hay Arden, IM me, I no longer have your screenname.

Well, that's where I beg to differ with Apple. Even an incredibly vastly ingeniously improved version of Preview is not a "new feature". Same goes for software that is/was available separately for Jaguar, such as Safari (which wasn't in Jaguar when it shipped) or iTMS. It sure depends on how you count, but hearing 150 new OS features lets me expect something else...

However, I agree that Panther is a really, really good evolutionary step in the big cat family. Not as big a step as 10.2 for me, I think, but that comes with the fact that 10.2 was really a good upgrade, too. I hope that the Finder gets quite a bit of attention for 10.4. Remember OS 9 and before? The Finder was always perfect, I think. It was a sacred cow that was slaughtered with 10.0 in some ways. And only slowly we get to the point where OS X's Finder can be called a worthy heir... I mean: They certainly can't count Labels to the 150 'new' features, can they? What's next: Auto-updating desktop, reflecting changes in the file-system _as they happen_? *Gasp* (gosh, I miss _that_ kind of speed sometimes...)

I bet it rules. :)

And I have seen something with replacing the Dock's background with a picture, I know it's a haxie but I don't know which it is. Grass or something...

Maybe we should make categories, because not all features are GUI features:
-updated Unix underneath
-Faster startup time
-X11 final
- etc.

Then interface iCandy:
-Exposé
-Brushed Metal Finder
-Labels
-etc.

And finally new Applications:
-iChat A/V
-Safari 1.1
-Preview
-etc.

categories sound like a good plan. i'm interested in all of the unix-non-gui features, like IPv6 et al.

also, i have to agree with fryke, new apps don't/shouldn't really count as "features."

in fact, i pretty much agree with everything fryke said. the finder in OS 9 was awesome, 10.2 *was* a huge upgrade (compared to the jump from 10.0 to 10.1), and yeah, i hate having to click on the desktop to see new files. bleh.
