"The volume xxx cannot be found"

I'm new to the Mac world and so don't know how to solve this issue. I recently uninstalled Safari because it wasn't compatible with what I need for The University of Phoenix online campus. However, I was trying to use a photography program today and it required me to use Safari. So, I put my X Leapord cd in and ran it. Now when I go to my sidebar, I get "The volume 'Ross' cannot be found." Can someone help me fix this. Thanks.

Did you reinstall Safari onto your Mac from your Leopard disc? I don't have Leopard yet so I'm trying to understand your issue.

Is the volume 'Ross' an external one?

Yes, I reinstalled Safari from the Leapord disc. The 'Ross' folder is not from an external drive. I had just moved it to the sidebar from Finder. Thanks for helping me.

The icon for "Ross" which you placed in the Sidebar is an alias or shortcut. Where is the original folder? If you deleted the original folder this would cause such an error message. Did you move it to another drive or delete it?

I don't think there's any connection between this and the re-installation of Safari from the Leopard disc. I'll keep searching around for more info ...

Actually the folder hasn't been renamed or moved to any other location. Any other ideas? Also, do you know how I can get rid of this icon from the side bar. I know some people suggest deleting the list file, however, I can't find this file anywhere.

Thank you, but unfortunately I cannot do that because as soon as I click on the icon, the error I previously mentioned occurs and thus, the icon can't even be hightlighted.

Perhaps you're clicking once, releasing the mouse button, then clicking and holding again then trying to drag it out.

Try this: click and hold on the icon and drag it out all in one motion -- don't click once to highlight, then click and hold and drag.

Have you tried checking to see you need to run any updates?
My husband was having this issue & I tried finding ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist, which I am clearly too much of a novice to figure out how to get to. (I work on a PC all day at work & then come home to a mac. Not easy.)
None the less... I clicked on the apple (top left for you newbies)
then clicked software update
after running the update & restarting his computer, I was able to drag & drop the inaccessible volumes to the desktop to remove them.
Good luck!

Can't help it JBarley! We just had the issue on his mac tonight. Gotta put out the updated responses for other people that might be having the same issue currently! Otherwise, what else is the point of even posting these things???
