For the first time in the history of customization, a theme has actually made a system faster. If you use osx themes with less graphic intensity and complexity than aqua (may I suggest the Glass theme, to be found at www.resexcellence.com. All you need to install themes can be found in one app, MetamorphX, can't remember the homepage, get it at www.macosxapps.com, phew these brackets had to cope with a lot) window and menu manipulation will be considerably faster.
Perhaps someone should design a stripped-down essentials-only os x theme for speed optimization... unless os 10.1 steals away all doubts of os x's prowess...
