(I'm pretty sure this be the correct place to post this. If not then that's my mistake.)

I have DivX 5.1.1 and everything but for some odd reason this avi movie I DLed will not display a picture. And anything I click play I get the message I don't have the right kind of compressor.

Edited Now I tried playing the movie in VCL and that worked so it's not like I can't watch it but if anything still has some idea I would like to understand why the above prob is happening.

I suspect that you tried to play the DivX AVI in the QuickTime movie player? The reason being is that the QuickTime player works with the QuickTime drivers, and this drivers do not have the DivX AVI codecs installed. Even if yo install the DivX codec, some AVI do not play, it depends on what version of the DivX codec was used to encode the movie.

The rule of thumb is to use Video Lan Client (VLC) to play DivX AVI (any AVI in that matter) and use QuickTime to play MOV's.

VLC is an excellent application and it has played any movie format that I have thrown at it.

Hope it helps...

VLC rarely handles DivX AVI's well.
I've found the best solution, especially on older computers, is to install 3ivX and DivX Doctor 2 on your Mac. Run DivX Doctor 2 on the AVI file to uncompress it to a MOV file, then play this MOV through Quicktime Player (this uses the 3ivX codec).
If your computer can handle it, MPlayer usually handles DivX files OK, though if it gets choppy in the video playback you'll need to go the route I first suggested.
