Bad sounds came from the left of my ibook- ticking, then the sad mac icon. A restart delivered the question mark folder, prompting a hardware test. All elements passed, but not before a rainbow panoply of screens(some very modern wallpaper patterns included)flashed accross. The question mark remains. I would like to know whether my G3 has devoured my files, and if a new machine is in order. Mostly backed-up, but for those tunes...

Can you boot from a system installation CD/DVD? If so, you might attempt to repair stuff or at least back up your songs as well.

Thanks for the tip. Popped OS X Install in to give it a whirl. Things are really slow- and now, in the select installation destination box, no locations show up???? Should I wait, or is the speed an indication that things are not hopeful?
