Tiger crashes when external hard drive is powered

These days, when I turn on and connect my maxtor external hard drive to my g4 powerbook laptop (recently upgraded to Tiger), the crash screen (a shadow wave that descends and prompts me to restart) comes. Whether I have the hard drive already powered and connect the Firewire cable after, or whether I connect the Firewire cable, then power the hard drive, no difference.

If I restart the computer with the hard drive connected and powered, the startup doesn't get very far (not even close to the desktop screen) before the crash screen happens again.

Before I upgraded to Tiger, this often happened - when I had the computer on and then powered and connected the hard drive, it crashed - but what is new is now the startup won't even go through with the hard drive connected, or if i connect it after startup, as I said, it crashes...

So I can't use the external hard drive and access my files there!

Any advice out there?

Thanks!

Andy
