my nephew has just been given an ibook (1.33 g4 60gb hd 512mb ram), and it won't boot up properly.
It starts up ok, gets to the default blue desktop but when the finder tries to launch it gets stuck, only the spotlight icon is visible and the spinninng umbrella is there constantly.
the same happens when trying to boot into safe mode. I've talked him through a fsck -fy as detailed here: http://www.macosx.com/content/faq.php/q11213/Tiger-Hangs-On-Startup.html but all it said was the drive appeared to be ok.
There are no peripherals attached, it's basically brand new with a few applications on it.
Is the likely answer a fresh install?
