Tiger install fails at 'Destination disk check'

I have an old iMac (spherical base, 1.25 Ghz CPU, 256 RAM).

I put in the Tiger DVD, and the installation works nicely until the 'Destination disk check' is reached. After a few minutes where the progress bar only goes forward one notch, I get the message that the install has failed and that I need to try it again (i've tried 3 times).

I have looked on teh Apple website, but their solutions blame third party applications which I have never heard of, much less installed.

Thanks for any help.

What this error message is saying is that your HD has certain errors which need to be addressed before the install can go forward. (It is running Disk Utility on your HD, making sure everything is repaired/etc)

So you have two options: Run Disk Utility from the Tiger disc to see what exactly is wrong with the HD you are installing to. Do a clean install after backing up which will have a new, clean filesystem without the errors.

Did you see this KB page? I would do the following and then try again.

1. Empty the trash, and clear all browser caches;
2. Repair disk and repair permissions (go here);
3. Run the 3 periodic maintenance (cron) scripts (see above link);
4. Update the prebinding (see above link);
5. Use a program, such as Cocktail, to clear the system- and user-cache files;
6. Use a program, such as Font Finagler, to purge font-cache files; and
7. Use, for example, Preferential Treatment, to find corrupt preference files.
