I was recently asked to install a system update, which i duly performed. However, since this was completed my computer has been loading to a blue screen followed by the darwin login screen. I have looked through a number of forums and decided that i would have to restart up to the setup assistant. Consequently, I restarted the computer to the single user screen using the command key and 's'. When prompted I entered:
/sbin/fsck -fy
which then told me that the HD was ok. I then followed this with:
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd var/db/netinfo
mv local.nidb/ local.nidb.bad
ls -ln /Users
which loads the usernames and UINs, which my current account is still under.
i then entered the command:
reboot
which loaded up to the welcome messages when you first load the computer, however it then continues to cycle through this again rather than loading to the setup assistant where I would be able to reinstall the account. I therefore re-performed this operation, but before entering reboot i entered the command:
rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone, that should apparently sort this problem, but it keeps telling me that no file or directory of this type exists. Whatever I try I cannot solve this problem and I continue to cycle through the initial mac os X tiger welcome message. I would prefer not to have to reinstall the whole system as I will lose all my photos etc.... and i do not have the system discs or if I do they are lost in the house somewhere.
The system log under tail -20 /var/log/system.log just says that the setup assistant movie starts, the setup movie is then completed before it crashes [setup assistant crashes (crashdump)] and a crash report is written.
The main forum I have used so far is http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=1553062
Any help in solving this problem would be greatly appreciated. If I can get to the setup screen i think I can sort it as the user details are still stored.
Many thanks in advance for any help.
