I hope someone can helpme. I have an ibook g3 600 mhz,640 MB, airport card,15 gig hd. It runs os x 10.1.2 fine. I just reinstalled it after the tenth time the tiger install locked up. The ibook freezes every time I try to install Tiger from the retail dvd. It usually freezes during the first part of the install, but once I got as far as the second or third part of the install. I thought it was the heat locking the ibook, but the oldos went back on fine. I need help!!!

01. Connect the iBook to your Mac Mini, via a FireWire cable.
02. Turn ON the iBook with the 'T' key pressed, until it boots into 'target' mode.
03. Turn ON the Mac Mini.

When the Mac Mini's 'Desktop' appears, the boot drive's icon - of the iBook, should displayed on the Mac Mini's 'Desktop'.

04. Insert the 'retail' copy 'Tiger' installation DVD, into the Mac Mini.
05. Run the DVD's installer - which will reboot the Mac Mini.
06. Attempt to install 'Tiger' onto the iBook.

You can disconnect the FireWire cable during the reboot - if you successfully installed 'Tiger'; or anytime afterwards (if the installation failed) - by dragging the Mac Mini's 'Desktop' icon of the iBook onto the 'Dock' based trash can.

If the installation process freezes, when attempting the above - this may be an indication of a non-clean DVD surface, defective DVD, etc. If the latter, you should be able to obtain a free replacement from Apple Computer Inc.

Either way, post your result(s).

Your explanation, barhar, would be okay if the iBook hadn't got DVD capability. But as far as I can see, that iBook is perfectly capable of reading the DVD. So the last point applies: Maybe the DVD is dirty/scratched...?

Also: When you try again, please keep the log-window open (you find it in the menus while it's installing) and look at any error messages before it freezes.

'Your explanation, barhar, would be okay if the iBook hadn't got DVD capability. But as far as I can see, that iBook is perfectly capable of reading the DVD.' ...

01. Yes, I did note the existence of the iBook's DVD drive, via - 'The ibook freezes every time I try to install Tiger from the retail dvd. '; and viewing Mactracker's ibook models.

02. 'If the installation process freezes, when attempting the above - this may be an indication of a non-clean DVD surface, defective DVD, etc' - still applies; and thus warrants the attempt to install 'Tiger' onto the iBook, via the Mac Mini.
I have seen, read, and experienced situations where a CD / DVD may not work (read and / or written to) with one computer; but does, with others.
