Tiger using wrong audio devices!

Hi all,

I have a mac mini and as well as using normal desktop speakers though the headphones socket, I also use a plantronics DSP-300 USB headset. Headphone (my desktop speakers) is by default audio out device. This worked great in 10.3

since I upgraded to 10.4 I am finding that a number of apps (flash, flash player app & viewing QT movie in a browser) are sending audio out to my USB headset, not my default device.

Have unplugged my headset (and rebooted for good measure), and now I'm getting no audio out on flash movies but as soon as I plug my headset in & restart the movie, I get sound!

Any ideas? this is driving me nuts!

Problem seems to be only in Flash.

Is there perhaps a flash player preferences file that I can delete? I would delete everything flash related, but I don't want to kill my flash mx 2004 install.

have created a new user and the problem exists there as well, so at least I know its not a user specific setting.

Have tried reinstalling & uninstall/reboot/install, neither helps

Any ideas anyone?

I'm pretty certain I'm seeing the same thing with Skype and a Griffin iMic. I made a call using Skype using a headset plugged into the iMic, and the preferences were set to use the USB audio device. Changing the preferences in the Skype program to use the internal devices didn't make any difference, the audio still went to the USB device.

I'm glad it not just me then! I was starting to wonder if I was the only person having problems.

If I find any solution, I'll make sure I post back

I'm not near my Mac at the moment, but I'll try the full cycle of restart with and without iMic attached to see if there's any pattern, and I'll let you know how I get on.

OK, after doing some more digging around, I found a few posts of various sites that attributed odd audio misconfigurations in Tiger with the coreAudio update. They all pretty much agreed that just opening GarageBand was enough to reset these rogue settings, and guess what... IT WORKS!

I now have flash & streaming quicktime playing out of my desktop sepakers just like it should.

Go figure......

btw, here is one of the posts I found that mentions the fix.
