How many hours has your computer been on for? Time machine backs up every hour for the past 24hrs. Then once a day for a month then weekly.

Other possiblility is that youve filled your external HDD up so you cant backup anymore? Is the HDD full?

thanks madelin for hints. i even went out and bought a 500 gb ext. hd and did backup, but it still won't work. tonight i will try trashing sys. prefs. and a few other prefs. also i am running tech tool pro on the entire machine systems etc. while i'm here at work. we will see what happens ??????????
frustrating--they have our money for the new sys. which was hyped very well, and we have the headaches !

Like you, I have a large external hard drive so I don't think it's a space concern. When I navigate to the drive location where the backups are being stored, I see the original and incremental backups, but time machine doesn't seem to see them when I navigate to recover a file using time machine. I, too, only see "Now" and "today" as options on the right scrolling menu.

Could there possibly be a configuration file that is out of sync?

after a successful partitioning of ext. drive using disk utility the time mach. now works as it is supposed too. i think that spotlite in indexing had to complete it's job completely. other than that i don't know.

I've got the same problem as Dickster. I've recently bought a 500Gb Time Capsule and everything seemed to be working fine . . . until I went to go back to retrieve some files from a previous backup. The forward/backward arrows do nothing. I can see the incremental files are there, but can't navigate to them. I can't even use the "cancel" button. The mouse seems to be useless ~ it moves about, but can't click on anything. The only way I can leave Time Machine is to use the "apple/shift/esc" key combination.

Any ideas?

OK it looks like I've sorted this problem out. I quit Time Machine and noticed that the Time Capsule drive (connected via ethernet) was listed under the Shared Devices column in my Desktop folder. When I clicked on it I was surprised to see that I needed my password to connect. This done, then back into Time Machine where I had to wait probably 3 to 5 minutes before I was finally able to navigate using the forward/backward arrows. But once I'd done that for the first time, every time I re-enter Time Machine the response is now almost instant.

Not sure why this happened in this manner as my old USB backup drive used to work fairly quickly. But at least I've got it sorted out now.
