Tired of being left out

Dear Apple (or anyone else),

First, I love my macs and have owned 10. I will continue to be a Mac user as long as you keep up the good work.

However, I am really tired of feeling left out. I'm not talking about software, I'm talking about media on the web. There is a long list of web media and web based shopping sites I cannot fully access on my Macs, but can on my PC. Whether it is highlight video clips on nhl.com or various zoom and 360 images of the B&W speakers I am considering purchasing or the Salamader Designs home theater rack furntiture configurator I would like to use, my Mac never seems to run what my PC can.

Of course, IE is often the culprit and it is true that Safari does in many cases work better, but I want it all and I want it now on the two default/included browsers of my Mac. Maybe it is the developers of these sites and there is often some little bit of code they need to use to give me full acess, but I don't care. We live in a web based world (or at least I do) and I would expect my $2500 G4 to be able to handle anything the web has to offer right out of the box. It doesn't while $700 PCs can. From a pure consumer perspective - the only one you should care about, this is not right.

Though I am not the most savvy computer user, I am sure I am up in the top 20 if not 10% of Mac users. I don't want to futz with my browser settings simply to do what PC users can do without even breaking a sweat, and I would bet other Mac users are even less inclinded to do so.

Please make it work. If it is someone elses fault, find a fix for their fault.

Thank you

You can use most pc based media on a mac (like wmv, rm files) but the problem is that they suck! The only useful thing about media player is that it plays media player files and realplayer is a terrible piece of software, on mac and pc. I haven't come across many files (with the obvious exceptions of exes etc) that I can't run, but its usually a hassle to do it and they tend to be lame formats anyway.

DivX support also annoys me. I know that osx and os9 can support divx but its a lot less intuitive than it is on windows and doesn't work as well. It is getting better though, especially with the more recent codecs and the newer quicktime versions.

Media on the web, as Monktus mentions is poor quality. Even if you go to PC, their are media types that suck. Realplayer is poorly designed software, both on Mac or PC.

It's even worse on a Mac, you should admit it. I get a few errors with DIVX files on PC, I get hundreds on Mac.

:(( that is a reason not to bye a mac... i use inernet a lot, for shopping or deciding what to bye. So what am i supposed to do? Use virtual pc when ever a web site doesnt open?

You cant see some sites not at all, or just the media types?

Just the media types.

When using Safari, you often get 'no plugin' messages, which ask for Windows Media Player.

I'm not seeling music or movie over the Internet, so that I don't encounter that much problems.

But it's true that Safari is still buggy. When Safari doesn't do it, I call Camino... and normaly it's ok.

My only point is that Mail sometimes do not respect PC rule when attaching images... and this is really a concern to me as I share photos with friends using PCs.

I just wonder if it's really THAT hard for Apple to release Mpeg 2 (I know you can buy it, but it should be free), Mpeg 1, WMV, and DIVX support for Quicktime.

Seriously, how long would that take them? The technology has already existed in the Windows world for 5 or more years. Couldn't they just have "Tim" spend a day and make Quicktime compatible with all those formats?

WMV is and will stay 100% MS-controlled.

DIVX is a strange thing. The DIVX codecs are legion. DIVX files are full of errors. Many DIVX files come with missing frames, with sound delay, etc. (just like MP3 encoded on PC used to a few years ago).

I don't understand why 99% DIVX plays fine on PC and 50% on Mac. I don't.

DivX is weird. Even on windows it can be a bit random. I've noticed some improvements with QT4 though, and especially since I discovered VideoLan. The most annoying thing about DivX on Mac is the sound problems and having to convert files for QT. I'm glad I've found an app that actually seems to play stuff straight off.
