To install, or not to install.

Androo

Yeah, Androo.
i downloaded panther 10.3 7b21 yesterday within a few hours (***).
I don't want to backup my files, unless i HAVE to. Is it stable enuff?
Is it worth installing?

If you have an old slow crash-test-Mac somewhere, test it on that machine. Don't ruin your good new shiny machine.

I have Panther too. But i only have good new shiny machines, so i won't install it. Too risky in my thought.

Yep, and don't forget to read the board rules, too. And the 'notice' thread in this forum.

Usually the best advice right there, right from the chevy's mouth.

Chevy: Shouldn't your title line contain something referring to your moderator status? Schrödinger's Mod or something?

I wouldn't install it as your main OS yet, as there are a lot of bugs still. Lots of great new features and improvements, but it hasn't all come together yet. It feels stable, except in Dreamweaver, but there are a lot of little annoying bugs they need to fix. I'm very impressed with it so far though.

I would install it-definitive

WWDC Panther runs on my machine for 2 mths. now(CUBE 2x500Mhz),stable as a champ,no major bugs, the only thing is Toast not working(yet!),but there are other burning features.
If 7B21 is even more stable-why not???

7B21 is not just 'more stable', it also breaks other things (example: InDesign 2 ran just fine on 7A179-7A202, but crashes on startup on 7B21). While Apple improves old and introduces new features in newer Panther builds, other stuff might break. So please: Only install Panther if you're also about to make backups of your work and can get back to a Jaguar build in a reasonable amount of time (and without loss of data). Beta testing is not for the weak. ;-)

(Track record: Killed my harddrive with System 7.6b3c1, code name 'Harmony' in 1996.)

Well, as I have mentioned elsewhere (dunno where, maybe to a neighbour)... I have install Panther on an LCD iMac which I am not using too much (fiancée's, she busy with the little menace of a son (see avatar))... anyway... I thought it was quite stable, until she started working a little bit again. After a day, she demanded I switch over to Jaguar again on the iMac.

The bugs where mainly in the finder (duplicated paths into partitions, the wrong path showing altogether in column view, connection glitches across an AFP network), and yes, Dreamweaver is unusable (as was Nisus Writer Express to mention a few).
