To optimize your system, launch Terminal (applications/utilities) and type
sudo update_prebinding -root /

enter your root password, hit enter, let the terminal go to work, restart, and X really WILL be faster!

I hate to be ignorant, but what does update_prebinding do?

Thought I'd ask, you know, before I run it and recursively rename all files on the drive ".profile" or something...

There are a bunch of good threads on this board that discuss update_prebinding. I recommend a Search. It's good reading.

It's a way to make the links in the system (library links, commands, etc.) faster (update them = adapt them to the new applications you have installed).

The more you install applications, the more you update prebinding. It's a known trick, and many utilities update them. I recommend an excellent utility called MOX Optimize.

According to a lot of places, updating the prebindings is no longer necessary in 10.2. The system apparently does it automatically when needed.
