Toast 5 not Working in panther

I can't start toast in Panther, does any 1 else have this problem ? the application quits as soon as it appears in the dock. Is there a wa to fix it ?

i did read about it in some other threads about panther. it will surely work as the "real" version of panther will be out though.

Yes. However, if you don't do too fancy stuff, there's three applications that come with Panther that do work well:

- Finder (data)
- iTunes (music)
- Disk Utility (disk images)

There are other utilities for specialised tasks like Video CDs and SVCDs around as free-/shareware. Basically, all or most of Toast's features can be replaced by now. Still: It's a nice package that'll be updated for Panther for sure.

Well, fryke, that's true for some people (maybe even most people), but not everyone. The Discburner framework (which those three use to burn CDs) doesn't have support for near as many burners as Toast does.

Like me, for instance, my burner isn't supported. I've found a little hack that makes it supported, but it doesn't burn at its full speed as a result of that. Until it is supported, I'll most likely be using Toast more than the Finder or iTunes or Disk Utility to burn CDs.

The most probable reason it doesn't work, is because Apple changed the FW (API)interface specs. So, there will probably be an update for Toast once the final version of Panther comes out.

I'm experiencing the same problem, but it's a little bit serious.
Before I install the Panther I made a backup image on disk using Toast (backup.toast).
Since I cannot open Toast 5, I'm unable to restore my backup.

Does anybody knows how can I open the .toast file without Toast ??? Is it possible ?

Thanks in advance.

Eduardo

On some .toast files, Apple Disc Copy (now called DiscImageMounter and part of the System or Disc Utility in Panther) opens them just fine. Some, but not all.

Hi,

It works.

There are a lot of good features like Image Recovery, and I could repair and mount the .toast file with my backup.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Regards,

Some guy said deleteting everything that had to do with Toast, then running the 5.2.1 installer, then delete Rox.dat in package contents/Contents/MacOS will make it work.

Didn't work for me though but there's a good chance I have a corrupted Installer. Let me know if this works!

I tried but didn't work for me, too.
I tried to use the Toast on OS 9 it opens but since I installed panther the Toast on 9 doesn't recognize my Iomega USB CD burner.

Does Panther affects os 9 ?
Extensions maybe ?

Bye...

My experience is that Disc Burner only runs correctly when i login as root, and indeed, Toast not at all..
But there is some sunshine: the app Dragon Burn workd perfectly under osx Panther for me, i even don't have to login as root.

For the .toast image problem: when i reinstalled my system (panther, without having 10.2 on the disk) my .toast images open automatically as .dmg, without changing anything..

Disk copy is not a separate utility in Panther like it is in Jaguar, it is now integrated as a core service. Apple's most likely revised the whole API. That's probably what's making Toast fail.

Toast will either have to be patched to work with panther or we will have to wait for Toast 6. Probably the latter...more $$$ for Roxio.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "core service" but i did some poking around and i found out that the disk image mounter is just an application that doesn't appear in the dock. If you right click on a disk image and go "open with" it even shows up there...

Nono, the disk burning is an API that could be defined as a 'core service'. The mounter is just a background application, you're right.

However: Toast is _not_ drawing on Mac OS X' disk burning APIs, as far as I thought to know, but is offering its own device driving functions. And I guess it's rather a problem with these functions. Well, whatever, I think we're pretty sure that Toast will be updated for Panther.

but how can you burn now? disk utility? how? please tell me.

(edited by fryke for improper use of ?s and !s.)

answer: take a look at your own thread that you've set up for this question.
