Toast Ti out - caution.....

Jeff, if you do some reading and checking, you will find that the majority of those installing the 5.2 update had problems - most of which involved a crash on launch of the APP., not with the installer.

I am certain that some of those having problems installed with some unusual circumstances, but I think you will find that most installed according to directions.

I have found that some software, when released can be a major problem for some while no problem at all for others. I have been on your side of a problem before - no issues with an install that many others have a horrific time with. Each situation is unique.

According to Roxio's statement to MacFixIt and others, it sounds like this software was not ready for release.

I have found that, when there are just a few scattered reports of problems - many times it is user error or extremely unusual installs that cause the problem. On the other hand, when there is a major ourpooring of problem reports, then there is quite often a bug or other issue with the software itself. In those cases, I try to supply my details so that it might be helpful for others to compare and see if thier problem is the same, or if they (or I) missed something.

I'm really not sure why so many people have problems with so many various software updates on OSX. The Roxio update went exactly as expected, as follows:

I logged into my machine under my admin account (which is also what I install ALL my software as - everyone IS doing that, RIGHT? - you KNOW that ADMIN is NOT for everyday use, right?), and ran the updater.

It asked me to identify the version of Toast I was updating (it even gave me the option to choose the copy I had duplicated to another partition as a backup, in case the naysayers where right), I selected the version in my Applications folder, it updated all the files, and placed a copy of the NEW app (Toast 5.2) in the same folder as the 5.1.4 version, which it left there. I removed the 5.1.4 app package (thought there was no apparent need to do so, other than for reducing redundant apps), and gave it a whirl.
I worked exactly as you would expect. I logged out, logged in as my user account, tested it, again... perfect. Now with the added features Roxio promised (ie: CD-TEXT et al).

No need to delete preference files, no removing previous versions. It just plain worked.

If you are going to bag a piece of software, make sure that it deserves it. And make sure that you, the user, aren't the cause of the problem.

So ask yourself: Are you STILL only running one account, ADMIN, on your OSX machine, and tinkering with it every other day?

Not everybody is using the EXACT machine you are with the EXACT burner installed. Everybody knows... or should know, that bugs such as this are software and hardware dependant. Before shunning everybody that has had a problem you should take a subjective look at everything that is happing. Maybe the problem is only with specific lazer mechanisms with a few versions of the OS.

Toast is designed to be a user friendly interface to make CD burning simple... Simple enough that any shmuck from the street can install the software, start it up and burn a CD. That being said I think the new version of toast DOES deserve the negative press that it's been recieving. If it was CLI based and needed to be compiled localy, on your machine then I could see being a bit more lenient

As far as the admin account are you talking about logging in as "administrator"?
There is a difference in that and running an account which has been designated an administrator of the machine. I do run on an administrator account daily. As long as you know what you're doing and know where to stay out of there is absoloutely no need to clutter your machine with multiple, un-needed accounts.

BTW... I have tried the update on two machines. an iMac DV SE and my B&W G3. The B&W had no problems while toast on the iMac would not even start up. For this test I used my Lacie firewire burner on both computers.
