Too slow

Hi,
My Computer is starting to run very slow. I use to work with heavy images files, so is not suprising. I keep 100 GB free at all times and I have the most as I can get on RAM (1GB) on an iMac Intel Core Duo.
What kind of mantainance can I do? I know that Panther doesn't include a defragmenter. Shall I reformat my hard drive? Which are the basic steps for doing so?

You should probably get another GB of RAM.
If the image editing software you use happens to be Photoshop, it will perform slowly because the current version of Photoshop does not run natively on Intel Macs.
