trackpad does not work

the trackpad of my computer does not work. In the help function it says i can switch on/off the trackpad in the mouse and keyboard preferences, but there is no menu item called trackpad there where i can change the settings !

Help!

Try deleting the "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache" file located in ~/Library/Caches with no programs running. Then, launch System Preferences and see if the trackpad option shows up.
