Trash bin says one thing, shows another

Before I click on "Secure Empty Trash Bin" again, I have a question. I just moved about 50 photos into trash, decided it had been awhile since dumping the trash, clicked on it, and said, empty....the window opens and says "now deleting 8,851 items." WHOA. Wait a sec! Huh?

So, I cancel cancel STOP cancel.....

I go to the trash bin, open it, and it appears there are 179 items in there to delete.

Opened a folder or two, nothing seems strange.

Any idea as to what's going on? I have loaded a new version of ONYX and I have the old one to trash (the app). Plus, I've run the ONYX a couple times....

Nothing else seems odd. Here's what I'm seeing (768mb)
3 aliases, 6 applications, 156 documents, 5 folders (170 items)
There is one audio file of 157mb (It was a 20 min presentation)

But when I click "empty" the message is "deleting 8,870 items"

Okay to say Okay and Empty even though the trash bin says one thing and shows another?

".app" Applications are actually folders full of other folders and many, many files. When you delete an application, perhaps the Trash is reporting the app as a bundle of files instead of a single file.
