trouble setting default application with Get Info

I am having trouble setting the default application for a file using get info. I want to use BBEdit Lite as the default app to edit the my .plist files but it will not let me. It let me use the standard BBEdit to do it, but my demo expired and I am too cheap to by the full app.

I get this from the system.log:

How can I overcome this?

Also, what the heck does this mean:

CFM failed to set the stack limit because requested limit is lower than current.

I get the same sh.. if anybody knows the speak up and lets hear about it :)
