Trouble shooting network connection

Hi. I have a G4 350MHz with OS X 10.1.3, and for some reason, the network connection through my cable modem no longer works. My question is, how does one trouble shoot problems like this? I seem to remember when I ran Linux a long long time ago, there were utilities that checked stuff like whether your ethernet card is being recognized.

I noticed that I am missing the /var/run/resolv.conf file, and just want to know whether I HAVE a connection but just cannot use "http://www.yahoo.com" like things OR whether my troubles are actually much deeper.

In short, what can I do to trouble shoot this thing??
