Trouble upgrading to panther from 9.2.2

i'm trying to upgrade my powerpc g4 700mhz with 256 ram
it is currently running mac os 9.2.2 with os rom 9.5.1

i have the panther installation cds and i've already successfully upgraded my powerbook g4

when i attempt the install i get the message:

"Startup Disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk. (-2)"

i wondered if the computer just isn't able to run panther but that seems odd

what are the possible reasons for this message?
any ideas much appreciated
 
Is that the retail Panther installer or the one for the PB?

If the latter, sorry. An installer for one Mac most likely
won't work with another.
 
Could be anything. What happens when you insert the CD, reboot and hold down the "c" key? If that doesn't work, reboot and hold down the option key. This should show you the bootable volumes and you can choose the CD from there...
