Trouble using two monitors on one machine

Hello. Is there a secret to hooking up two monitors to one Mac? I have a new Mac Pro. It has two DVI ports. So I have no problem connecting my Samsung monitor that is DVI ready. My older ViewSonic I have to use the DVI to VGA adapter that came with my Mac Pro. As soon as I plug the older monitor in the new monitor freezes and the older monitor's screen stays black. Is there a sequence I should be following for this to work?

You might need to visit your displays system preference, try the gathers windows button and see if the other display is actually detected or not.
