so when i was browsing the web, it said i needed to update to version 10.4.4 and it included a link to a web page on mac. i downloaded the software fine and it required me to restart the computer, and when i did i thought that it didn't actually update the computer so i then went again to install the software which installed completely for the second time, i then went to restart my computer and when i did all i got was a screen that was grey and had the mac icon on it. and i have been trying to get it to work but i don't know what to do.

That'll get your Mac booting in "safe boot," which can sometimes help with the situation you're facing. However, the gray screen with the Apple logo stuck there is not a good sign. Is the progress indicator spinning? You might have to reinstalled the OS from the original 10.4 DVD using the "archive and install" option.
