Hey guys

Im having some troubles with my mothers computer (gah... Parents should not be let near computers.. anyway). It wouldn't boot (well it would boot get to the point of loading the clock but not much else onto the desktop and then freeze) so I booted off the Norton CD and started disk doctor it got to "Checking Catalog Structure" and then froze. I have tried to rerun it several times and I get the same thing. Only a little over half the disk is being used.

I have been able to get the computer booted and got the data off but I cant get disk doctor to finish working.

Any ideas Im sure its not good I need help

Get the OS CD and boot from that. Now find the Utilities folder and run Disk First Aide. Click on verify, then when that is done click on repair.
When that is done, go to the hard drive>system folder>preferences. locate the following and trash them:
Finder Preferences
Mac OS Preferences
System Preferences
Empty the trash, then go to the Apple Menu>Control panels>Startup Disk. Select the hard drive. Close the windows, select restart.
Immediately after you select restart, hold down the options and command(apple) keys. continue to hold them down until you get a dialog box asking if you wish to do a desktop rebuild. This will appear after the extensions load at the bottom of the screen. Release the keys and click on the okay button.

You should be back in business.

Hi tobes,

Have you tried restarting with extensions off? If not press and hold down the "shift" key on restart and see if it does restart properly. When it does open your desktop printer/s and look for a file, if one is there dump it in the wastebasket and restart again as normal. This happens to me every now and then when I print from M$ Office. Also if you can afford it, it's not that expensive, get Diskwarrior from Alsoft, I've found it much more robust that Norton.

Well as it turned out the HD is about to cark it. I noticed lotsa ticking coming from the HD and when I asked mum about she said it ahd been doing it for a while.

Ie the hd is about tocark it. Getting a new one put in and also taking the chance to put more memoery in and be rid the house of os9. OSX all the way now. Which I must say plays much better with Linux and Xp boxes than OS9 does.
