Truncate audio file

I guess this applies to all Macs, but specifically I need help for iPhone.

Now that "MakeiPhoneRingtone" is out, I need to find a way to create a separate mp3, or AAC, from any one of thousands of iTunes songs to use as a ringtone. I'd like to use just part of an entire song as the file.

What program, freeby or not, allows for creation of a new smaller file from a far larger one?

(I know already that QT will convert from mp3 to AAC)

Doesn't the current version of iTunes actually have a feature that does exactly what you're talking about?

Also, Audacity (free) is simple -but powerful- audio editor.

I'm not referring to a "purchased" ringtone; just a song/audio that I already have in iTunes.

I'll get Audacity and try it. Thanks.

The most important message about all of this is the following: Learn to use the vibrate-mode. There's no need for ringtones, be they old-school beeps and melodies or the latest hip track by a teenage supastar. ANY ringtone has, in most cases, two effects:

1.) It'll get on people's nerves.
2.) You'll feel ashamed. (Rightfully so.)

I know it sounds strange to most people, but modern phones don't actually need to "ring". Thank you.

(Using ringtones is akin to sending E-Mails as HTML-messages, using cheesy animated GIFs on your homepage or putting a Ferrari-sticker on your Ford sedan.)

Yes!

You both need to take your Prozac!

Unless the iPhone is touching my body, "vibrate" will undoubtedly be ignored.
