Typing in Russian/Cyrillic?

Hi guys,

I know for a fact that OSX has Cyrillic characters in it, because I got some Russian porn SPAM email and all the unicode russian characters came out properly.

Anyone know how to type in Cyrillic? perhaps a new keyboard layout would do the trick, but I don't know how to get/make/install one.

Thanks

I'm having the same problem. I tried turning on Ukrainian in the international preference pane, but it still really limited the cyrilic characters to just a few.

Also, some strange things started happening when I did this. Apps that are set to turn on at startup show up before they hide rather than being hidden as I've set them to be. Strange.

bighairydog,
I tried this again, and now it works. You have to download special fonts however. Normal fonts don't have all of the characters you'll need. I got my Ukrainian fonts from Brama. You do have to add the language you want in the International preference pane.

Logout and login again.

When you type you have to select from the international menu (Russian, Ukrainian etc.) whatever language you need to type in.

How do you do that?

I go to Preferences -> international pane, and I get a list of 7 languages. So I click the 'edit' button, and a longer list comes up that I can choose from. None of Russian Cyrillic or Ukranian are there.

How did you manage to select Ukranian?

They are actually written in cyrillic in the list.
For me they are listed just below U.S. English (not English.)

btw - Trebuchet MS actually has Cyrillic characters built into it.

Perhaps you may have decided not to install some of the international language stuff in Software Update. Just a thought.

I checked the Software update - none of the packages it is offering are from any countries that use cyrillic. Do you recall doing anything during installation of OSX that would enable using extra languages?

Ta for the help by the way...

The only thing I remeber during installation is you could uncheck languages to be installed. I know Ukrainian is not one of the languages. it just has support for the characters.

You don't see any cyrillic words in the language list? Running 10.1.2?

This has been a bit flaky for me. Until I turned off Russian and Bulgarian, it wasn't the right character set.

You get Russian and Bulgarian too?

OK, next time I have to install OSX I'll look more carefully, 'cos something obviously went wrong with my installation (yes, I'm on 10.1.2).

thanks for the tips.

No problem with Russian, just set it up in OS X, best browser for Cyrillic- OmniWeb, all windows for typing ok, not as in Explorer

How do you do this? Are you getting Russian listed in the list in the international preference pane?

LOL!!!

All fixed, and I sent it off to all my friends with the same problem (A bunch of students studying russian).

You're beautiful!

Hi,

I have been reading with interest this thread, as I need to key in some russian for some interantional packaging. The Apple Knowledge Base is absolutely rubbish, with the worst search results...come on apple sort it out...anyway there was a link

http://www.mikeosx.com/files/X101osCyr.b3.pkg.sit

but it no longer works, does anyone know where else I can get it???

If someones got it could you attach it or is it too big?

I'm desperate!!!

I went through the process described but cyrillic does not appear in my list.

Many thanks

Bobbyfett :)
