ultralast loser report

I bought an ultralast battery for my Macbook Pro. It is a circa 2007 model (Core 2 Dual) and I'm not pleased with it. I bought it less than six months ago and it already claims to have 97 cycles on it. I keep it plug in almost 100% of the time.

But what is troublesome is that it does not shutdown gracefully any more. It just suddenly stops after about a half hour of use. The battery indicator says it still have an hour plus left. When it shuts down, I hit the button on the battery and it still have 4 leds. So, something is just messed up.

I'm trying to calibrate it but that doesn't seem to be helping either. I've done the calibration process twice now. I'll try it again.

Anyhow... you get what you pay for. I'd rather have spent the extra $$ and gotten something more reliable.

Many people have reported problems with 3rd-party batteries and their Mac portables, and some of the problems reported are exactly as you say: computer suddenly shutting down/sleeping, excessive cycle count on battery, battery reporting inaccurate charge levels, etc.

I guess my only advice is, when purchasing replacement batteries for Mac portables, to purchase Apple-branded batteries direct from Apple. They cost more, but are guaranteed to work perfectly with your Mac portable, and, if your Mac DID exhibit problems like you describe with an Apple-branded battery, you have a course of action to rectify the problem through Apple.

Have you contacted the manufacturer of the battery about the problems and possibly getting a replacement? Maybe it's just a bum battery.

I will say this: Apple batteries are obscenely and immorally overpriced. Every time you buy one a poor child is fed to starving kittens.

Fine.

The problem with alternatives is exactly what you suggest: worse.

I can recommend one vendor--but I do not want to "spam." They sent me a battery which I checked with the very useful CocoBattery--and found it was not at full cycle.

They replaced it immediately for no cost and refunded my original cost AND the shipping. Thus far, this battery has lasted longer than the original Apple battery.

So, as EDCC notes, if you buy from Apple [PBUT--Ed.], you know what you get. You also pay through the nose--and other orifices--for it.

I do not know, maybe listing the "good" ones and the "bad" ones might help people.

I just sent ultralast an email via their site form. I'll update what happens.

Doctor-X... can you send me that vendor via private message?

I'll probably go with one from Apple but if you have a good experience with it, it might be worth trying.

Thank you all...

Certainly will. Feel free to communicate with the vendor and DEFINITELY check any battery you buy. For while Apple charges far too much for their batteries, they sell good batteries. An easy way to sell cheaper batteries is to sell, well, cheaper batteries!

I use the vendor though Amazon because if I am not happy they will cancel the sale. I did not have to do that with the battery I first got. :)
