Unable to burn a CD

I'm running Mac OS 10.4.3

I have a brand new PowerBook G4 with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846 Super Drive. When I try to burn a CD (TDK 80 min 200 MB CD-R), I get the following error messages:

"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = MEDIUM ERROR
Sense Code = 0x0C
WRITE ERROR"

Next message:

"The drive reported an error:
Sense Key = ILLEGAL REQUEST
Sense Code = 0x30, 0x05
CANNOT WRITE MEDIUM - INCOMPATIBLE FORMAT"

Would you please tell me what I need to do? I tried using Toast 7 and have also tried dragging the files onto the CD.

Haven't tried DVDs yet.

Can it read cd's &/or DVD's? If so, like mine, your SuperDrive is shot!
