Unable to connect to cd-rom, network, or open programs

I am using OS 10.3.9. I was trying to upload a file to our server when the computer locked up. When I rebooted I cannot access any network drives, the internet, or even my cd rom drive. When I try to open programs I get an error message that the disk could not be found. Nothing has been changed at all...any idea what could be causing these problems. I backed it up using firewire (the way that bypasses OSX). Thanks

You need to open the Disk Utility in the Utilities directory and run 'Verify disk" and also check/repair permissions.

The verify disk will probably yield errors and if so, reboot and hold the OPTION S key down. This will give you a text based interface. Kinda scary - just type in FSCK -fy press enter. Run that program until there are no error messages.. then type in reboot..and you should come up ok.

During a file copy, lots of things are in the air so to speak. The source HD is being read from and maybe written to for swap space and temp files. The TCPIP stack is humming along - so it is possible for corruption to occur.
