Unable to see external USB HD on desktop

Hi,
I hooked up an external USB Hard Drive to my
G5 3 days ago, Thinking that It will take a couple of
minutes for it to appear on my desktop( this ext HD
used to be hooked up to my windows pc so it's FAT32).

I forgot about it and today I saw the HD hooked up
to my Mac and checked the desktop. Still no sign of
the HD. I checked System Profile and it 'sees' the
the USB hard drive. I tried hooking it up to the front USB port,
still... nothing. Any ideas why? this is the first time
I'm hooking this HD to my Mac.

The external is powered up? And you know for sure that the USB works? Have you tried restarting your Mac and then seeing if the external shows up? After that, you may need to go into Disk Utility and reformat the drive (I've had do that with both a firewire and a USB external). After that, it should work and show on the desktop.
 
Thanks Randman, yeah the drive is powered up,
I restarted, still no HD on my desktop. I checked to see if my USB ports were
functional. so I hooked up my wacom tablet to different ports, it worked fine in
all the ports.

I then tried hooking up the ext HD to the USB port on my Apple LCD,
after a couple of seconds, there it is.. that "NO NAME" icon sitting on my desktop.
I dont know if I should be transfering data via my LCD though. why is it not shoiwing
through my main ports?
 
It uses an external power source, It's one of those HD
where I bought the HD seperately and then bought the casing that comes
w/ a small fan, USB 2 connections and the power supply unit.
 
Ailes Grise - Having the same issue here -- I have a USB2 / 2.5 hard disk with external power formatted with FAT 32. It worked a few days then stopped - Plug it into my windows machine and it seems to work perfectly, scan disk and check the disk with numerious utilities in windows ---- plugged it back in to mac -- still didn't mount.. Gave Up and gave it to my gf to use with her windows machine.

I'm calling it quits too. I'm gonna try it with my 12" PB when I get it back,
get all data out and format it from my mac.

*acidtuch10, I see you're running Zeta RC2 OS, how is it?
 
Maybe an overly basic question, but does an icon for the hard drive show up in the sidebar of a Finder window? If so, what do your Finder preferences look like?
