Unable to select files to open in Azures or VLC

Hi, for a while now when using certain programs (Azures and VLC in particular) I'm unable to select a file to open. When I click 'Choose File' the finder window will appear but when i select a file then go to click "Open" the whole program quits.
What can I do?!
 
Am I understanding this correctly that it's not actually a Finder window but rather the open-dialogue of the applications themselves that crashes the apps? Anything spectacular in the crashlogs? (See "Console".)
 
If it only happens in those two apps, I'd try and get the newest version of each (maybe a beta even) and get rid of the apps' preferences. Then try again.
