Unistalling OS X

I have a G4 533mhz that I have just recently bought from my former employer whose selling all of there computer hardware. The G4 has OS X on the computer and I can not unistall the software. I can't boot up OS 9 classic because it has been totally removed. Is there a way for me to unistall OS X or perhaps partition the drive and install OS 9 on the G4.

yes there are ways to install 9. please give your full specs of mac-chine and perpherals - having 2 cd drives would help or even an external drive and a cd drive.:D

Power Mac-G4 533mhz CD-RW, OS X 10.0.3, 256MB,IBM Deskstar IDE/ATA 40GB HD,128 SDRAM

Ed,

I hope this could help. These are the specs for the PMG4. Like I said before. The only operating system on the computer is OS X. I am fine with the operating system on the computer. I just have to give the computer to a co-worker who needs to have OS 9. I read that possibly writing an Applescript to uninstall OS X might work. Problem is I'm not at all ready to do that. Any positive advice.

Thanks

Hmmm....
Are there any apps to which you do not have CDs for ? If just OS X is installed on the machine (no classic) then why not just format and install OS 9 ?

YOu can install classic, and boot into OS 9 and manually delete all OS X files *but* you will need to use ResEdit to make all invisible folders & files visible (there are quite a few of them) and there are a few that you cant even delete for some reason or another because they are like ghosts. They are there but not there. A format will take care of such probs :)

If you don't want X on at all, yes just reformat. If you want both, insert the OS 9 disk in and then in the startup disk in system prefs select the CD as the boot and install.

This is one thing that I think is bad about OS X -- it is not contained all within one folder, like OS 9's system folder was. That was much more convenient -- you could have two installs of the same system on one partition, and all you need to do to restore your system is drag the system folder off your backup CD onto your hard drive and it would be all set.

I'm sure all of the system resources can be contained in one folder. I can't imagine a reason why it couldn't, since a lot of the system components are in nested folders, anyway.

C'mon Apple, restore one of the things that made Mac OS 9 easy to use!

Ed,

I read your post to the person "3MORS". What I'm having trouble with is trying to get the computer to boot with a OS 9 cd. It won't allow me too. The operating system goes right back into OS X. I've tried holding down the "C" key. Holding "Option" , and then even holding "Shift". Nothing works! I decided to boot with the OS X cd. Go to "Drive setup" then try and partition from there. Can you tell me if I'm in the vicinity of trying to install OS 9 on this  DANG BLASTED PM!!!!! S#&@

Thanx :) To everyone

ok, try this. if you have a copy of 9 on some other program disk- like a disk repair app., drag and drop the system folder to your hd. you might even be able to locate the system folder on your install disk and do this. now try rebooting from 9 cd. if that doesn't work try booting from the copied disk version and then running your install disk from there. do a clean install. I had to do this once when part of my installed system 9 went corrupt and i could only load osx.

one other option that just occurred to me after rereading everthing is inserting your disk while in x, go to startup disk in system preferences and choose the disk as startup. if by chance you get stuck with disk as startup after the install, you might need to manually eject disk during restart before it starts accessing it.all should go back to normal and you can move back and forth between them thru startup disk.

i guess part of the question here that people seem to be assuming, including me, is that you have the original system disks. what disks did you actually get from your employer and if they're not the originals, any chance you could hunt them down and at least borrow them and make copies.?

if you are trying to use a 9.2.1 update disk, they are notorious for not launching by holding down c..

Um Ed, you can not boot from a system folder off a cd that was copied to the hard drive. If you try you will get a message stating that.

rdhazard - i didn't think so either until i did it. it was from techtool pro disk i think - 9.0.4. i may have run an update on it manually afterwards, i'm not sure. i just know i got it to work. since running osx i have found some of these things we could never do before are now workable. i don't understand it, i just do it. I'll admit i might never be able to replicate it but it might be worth a try before giving up completely.

puzzled as you about it. :D

Hey Ed, I have an idea for this guy. 2 options if he does not have the OS 9 disk. 1 Bite the bullet and buy it. or 2, will a fast connection download it off hotline or a newsgroup. And since he did buy the computer and therefore a license (I know my spelling sucks:eek: ) he can dowload it without breaking the copyright. Granted the person posting it may be, but that's not his fault:p
Just a thought
