i don't know much about anything, but i was looking at the process listing and noticed that every now and then, my computer starts "thinking" and some process is carried out by a user - "???" it's not my user or the root. is this anything i should be worried about? i know this is an amateur question, but any info would be helpful. thanks.

Likely no. There are programs that run as separate users for various reasons, all part of the system.
To take a look at the various user/group names used by the system:
1. Select an icon (such as an empty folder you create your hard drive).
2. Select Get Info from Finder's menu at the top of the screen.
3. Click the triangle next to "Ownership and Permissions".
4. Unlock the padlock, if necessary, by clicking on it.
5. Click and hold on the owner button.
Do you have a broadband connection to the Internet? If you do and you're concerned about security, it probably wouldn't hurt to enable your firewall, System Preferences>Sharing.
