after installing ubuntu on my eMac once i mount my OS X partition i cant access any of my files on my OS X partition. when i try it says i do not have permissions. Also once the OS X partition is mounted it shows folders that Linux does (usr, opt, tmp, etc) since Mac uses custom directries (Applications, Library, Users) i was wondering what of these UNIX folders are NOT needed and what is ok to delete.

When you reboot to OS X, those normally-hidden folders will not be visible.
As MisterMe so "nicely" puts it, the 'unix' folders are just that - for Unix, which is the base system that OS X uses. You should not choose to disable your OS X system by removing any of them.

You should find that you can access files in your Shared folder.
So, you could move, or copy files to your Shared folder.
