Unusual Crash Behavior 10.3.5

Is this a "kernel panic?" Using a TiBook with 10.3.5.

Went to dial my internal modem and the screen went black and started printing out register values. It also attempted to print out a stack trace, but reported a failure in, I think, in the stack frame or that a memory partition was invalid (I don't remember totally what it was saying). It did this over and over again. I had to pull the battery from my powerbook in order to reboot. (Is there a hard reset on the TiBook?)

I expected a "kernel panic" to be non repeating.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

First thing, a forced restart on a Tibook only requires you to hold down the little button in the back for about 5 seconds. Second, I believe you were seeing a kernel panic. Your best bet would be to boot from your 10.3 Panther Install Disk and once it starts the install, stop the install and go to File and launch Disk Utility. You want to run Repair Disk and Repair Permissions. Hopefully this will help. Good Luck.

Some time ago, a kernel panic looked like this. However, Apple has replaced those cryptic messages for (most) kernel panics, so people see a gray screen with the Power button, informing them that a restart is needed. The messages _you_ saw are really quite unusual. I urge you to try a complete backup and a reinstall with importing only the files (and not all the settings), as it can be very difficult to find out what exactly was the culprit for this behaviour. And no, I would not repair permissions or check the disk before reinstalling, as it'll take you longer in the end. ;-)
