Unzipping archive

I've been using Macs for eight years and never had this problem before today. If I unzip an archive folder, no matter where I put it on my Mac, it alway opens in the same folder, one where I don't want it. I've been into Archive Utility preferences and selected "Save expanded files: into the same directory as archive", but to no avail. I really don't know what else to do and have no idea how the problem arose. Any suggestions welcome. Michael

IMHO, the best unpacker is 'The Unarchiver'. It is free. Be sure to go to preferences and make it the default, activate all types, and designate the place to unpack; in my case, I use the finder.
