Now that the new Powerbooks have a DVD burner that burns at 2x is there anyway that the 1x drive in my orig 17 can be upgraded someway other than relpacing the drive. Someone said early on that the firmware in drive could upgraded to allow 2x burning. I know the orig press release said 2x and then was changed to 1x

There is no firmware released to upgrade your DVD burner.

Right now, the only way to upgrade the burner's speed is to replace the drive.

I am using it for some time. No problems at all. I think it's just not official, since you might face some heat-issues. But since I am not using my tibook (same superdrive like 17'' alu) as a copy device, it should be just fine. Btw, the most interesting thing: CD-R burn at 16x! ;)

Why is that interesting? Most DVD burners have faster CD burning than DVD burning. The pathways for DVD's are a lot smaller, so it has to be much more careful than on a CD.

It is interesting because it is a totally different technology. Not everyone understands that.
The DVD uses smaller blocks to store the information. Hence the DVD takes more time to burn those blocks. The DVD can hold 4.7 GB verses a CD that holds 700 MB.
The burn time would be faster on a CD.

Give it another year or two and DVD's will be burning at a faster rate.

Well, you guys got me wrong. I meant it is most interesting, since the update allows you to burn CD-Rs in 16x speed. Before 8x! ;)
