Upgrade or Buy New Mac?

I currently have an iMac G5 (OSX 10.4.11, PowerPC G5 (3.0), 1.8GHz, 512 MB) and am at a point where I have to upgrade to be able to upgrade Safari (which now crashes regularly) and open certain docs, videos, etc. received from newer computers. A few people have said I should just get a new computer instead. I mainly use it for WP, e-mail, internet access, music and photo storage, burn CDs and some creative stuff. Interested in others’ opinions as to what to do.

OS 10.5 should serve you well if you up your RAM to at least 1Mb, however, baring the $ dilemma, a new Mac would be the best.

You can max out the RAM on that to 2GB for about $60 (crucial.com or macsales.com).

There is also a developer actively porting new versions of Firefox to G4/G5 Macs running Tiger (10.4) or Leopard (10.5). Check it out at http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/ . That alone might solve your browsing problems (although really, I think you'll want more RAM no matter what).

What kinds of documents from new computers are you having trouble with? OpenOffice should work with all modern Microsoft Office files. You can get a (slightly) old version for PowerPC Macs like yours here: http://www.openoffice.org/download/all_rc.html

For videos, VLC will play most files and is still supported on PowerPC. Get it here: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-macosx.html

I'm still rockin' a G4 Ibook in daily use.max out your ram, upgrade to 10.5.8 switch to 10-4 fox or the newest Camino browser and you'll be good to go for another year or two!
