I need to upgrade my OSX hard drive. I need to know if can just install the new hard drive. Copy the existing data from my boot hard drive to the new hard drive and then change them out.

What model Mac do you want to perform the surgery on?
It would be easier to back up those important files, and downloaded installers - on Cd or Zip disk. Then install the new hard drive, then install OS and applications. Then you know you have a fresh system with fresh programs installed.
